Действующий чемпион Европы провалился в отборе на катарский чемпионат мира, а Англия, в отличие от Италии, на турнире выступила достойно. Интереса данной паре добавляет тот факт, что именно эти национальные сборные выявляли сильнейшего в решающем матче Евро два года назад – тогда на «Уэмбли» сильнее оказались подопечные Манчини.

В 2021 году, кроме успеха на континентальном первенстве, Италия установила рекордную беспроигрышную серию, которую могла перебить на ЧМ-22 Аргентина, но в стартовой встрече уступила Саудовской Аравии. Интересно, что в 21 веке англичане ни разу не обыгрывали итальянцев в официальных встречах. После проигрыша в финале Евро два года назад  Кейн и компания сыграли с обидчиками вничью, а потом проиграли 23 сентября – единственный мяч на свой счет записал Распадори.
